5 Tips for Moving Offices

If you think moving your family across town was enough stress and headache, try coordinating the logistics of moving an entire company to a new facility. One reason for the increased stress level is that you’re moving equipment and sundry other items for multiple employees — in some cases, hundreds of workers.

To ensure a smooth transfer to your new corporate digs goes without a hitch, follow these five tips:

  1. Compare the square footage for each facility and individual workspaces. Just because your accounting department currently has three desks and 10 filing cabinets, doesn’t mean they’ll fit in their new office.
  2. Label heavy and hard-to-move items with a number or color. Especially if the two facilities have a different amount of floors.
  3. Ensure all utilities are in working order in the new facility (e.g., telephone, Internet, etc.).
  4. Encourage employees to clean and pack their immediate areas. This will not only help individual departments, but it will make the move smoother for the transfer professionals.
  5. Rented equipment might require movement by the rental organization. If you move the item on your own, damages will most likely not be covered.
